Upset forging - SK is an upset forgings manufacturer and supplier from China

As a leading forging manufacturer in China, SK used upset forging process to provide different types and models of forging products for the customers from Germany, Britain, the United States, Japan, Argentina, and Middle East.

What is upset forging?

Upset forging is usually applied on bar stock. Upset forging decreases the length of the stock and increases its cross-section. The high pressures from the machine deform the metal and force material into a designated area of the bar. The material is shaped into tools such as bolts, pinions, drill rods, and other objects where high strength is a necessity. Upset forging refines the mechanical properties by re-orienting the grain flow to the shape of the tool. The upset forgings are stronger than the products made by casting or machining.

Features of upset forging

1. Upset forging could increase the utilization of material. It is based on plastic deformation of the metal. Upset forging could forge the parts without cutting or machining. The utilization of materials is generally more than 85% up to 99%.
2. Upset forging usually increase production efficiency as the time of deformation of metal is relatively short, especially in multi-processing machine.

3. Upset forging process can improve the surface of products and ensure the accuracy of products.

Materials Used for Upset Forging

Upset forging has special requirements on hardness of the raw materials. In order to minimize the cracking tendency of materials and improve the mold life, upset forging requires the hardness of raw materials as low as possible. General requirements of the hardness of raw materials is HB110 ~ 170 (HRB62-88).

Some Useful Guide of Upset Forging

Upset forging is a metal shaping process in which a heated workpiece of uniform thickness is gripped between split female dies while a heading die (punch) is forced against the workpiece, deforming and enlarging the need of the workpiece.

Full understanding of the part is important for economical upset forging. We work with our customers for development of new parts, redesign of existing parts, and conversion from castings and weldments to forged parts. Upset forging is the process by which bar stock is gripped between a stationary and a moving die and shaped under considerable pressure as a heading tool moves against the end of the bar.
